Borrow a Traditional Musician

Now orchestras in Oslo can borrow a professional traditional musician to strengthen their ensemble!

We at Samspill are proud to collaborate with UNOF (Norwegian Youth Orchestra Association) on the project Borrow a Traditional Musician!

This is a continuation of the successful concept Borrow a Folk Musician, but now with a focus on international traditional music. Together, we offer school and amateur orchestras in Oslo the chance to host professional musicians with backgrounds from Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Brazil — all based in Norway. The musicians share their musical heritage through workshops and collaboration, giving participants new impulses and musical perspectives. For Samspill, this is a unique opportunity to connect our performers more closely with the orchestra community.

The following musicians are part of "Borrow a Traditional Musician":

Nawar Alnaddaf

Nawar Alnaddaf plays the oud, a string instrument from the Middle East. The oud resembles a lute or a guitar and is as popular in the Arab world as the guitar or piano is here. She is from Syria and is happy to teach the orchestra one or two songs.

Mirsaeed Hosseiny Panah

Mirsaeed Hosseiny Panah plays the santur, a Persian string instrument. The santur is a type of hammered dulcimer – a box with strings stretched over it, which are struck with small mallets. He has arranged simple pieces for orchestra featuring basic Eastern ornaments and melodic lines. If time allows, he also enjoys talking about microtones and doing a small musical game on the topic.

Celio de Carvalho

Celio de Carvalho is a Brazilian-Norwegian percussionist. He works with improvisation using Brazilian rhythms and body-based rhythmic patterns. His rhythm workshops are based entirely on using the body as an instrument.

Safaa Al-Saadi

Safaa Al-Saadi is a percussionist from Iraq. He will work with improvisation and lead a rhythm workshop. Safaa brings 30 small drums and other percussion instruments for the orchestra to try out.
